Vista RTM Scheduled for Oct. 25
I don’t know what happened to this post, but oh well… Accordign to this article in the Seattle Times, there is a clock in Buildin 9 in Redmond that is counting down the day until Vista releases to the manufacturer or RTM. This is a big milestone because it means Vista is closer to being available to the genuine masses. The big OEM’s and other shops will get this verion of Vista and will soon start cranking out Vista PC’s and all kind of Vista goodness. Soon, should be in January.
A nice quote in the article explains a lot of the information:
An Oct. 25 RTM date would give computer manufacturers enough time to get new machines loaded with Vista into store inventories for an early January launch, which could still catch some momentum at the tail end of the holidays, said Joe Wilcox, an analyst with Jupiter Research.
The other intersting part of this article is there is a rumor that Bill Gates will launch Vista at his keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show or CES.
Can’t wait for this….
Update: Now Schedule to RTM Novemeber 2 due to a security hole that was found and fixed
Off base again Robert
A poster that goes by the name Layz on Robert’s blog makes perhaps the best comment on his write up of the whole Google and YouTube deal
Scoble, your opinion on this is amaturish as best. Unlike Cuban you have absolutely no position or expertise or insight on this business, so I’m not sure why the hell anyone would be asking your opinion. You’ve never held a position responsible for producing any product up unitl 3 months ago (and it’s debatable whether what you are producing is a product). Before that you were a very low level employee at MS, as far as I could tell, with NO responsiblity on product decisions. Before that you were, I dunno..an MS MVP, wherever the hell that means. And you worked in the tech press biz, and sold cameras. So, exactly were does your expertise in this area, compared with Cuban’s come from?
This is still another example of Mr. Scoble becoming more and more irrelevant and less and less interesting to read. Besides reading about who he went for moonlit walks and who ate what for breakfast we get to listen to him pontificate about other things he has no idea about.
I think this whole purchase for Google will be a very ugly thing. (But I hope to be proven wrong) I can’t wiat for all the cease and desist orders to start comming to the great Googleplex in the sky. I don’t pay to download shows on iTunes (basically because I hate thier software and have a terrible network connection) but why should I if I can find them or most of them for free on YouTube or elsewhere. And as the great Mr. Cuban writes, I can find any clip on Stewie from family guy or Homer doing somethings stupid when that’s all I really want.
How many stupid radio morning shows are going to lose half of thier stuff when they can no longer link/play stupid YouTube movies due to copyright issues? Part of the allure of YouTube was that it was anti-establishment and anti-corporate. Now it is has lost that….
The other question that needs to be asked is will Google continue to block material it finds offensive? Remember they already edit the news they put on Google News
We already know that Google controls what is put on its news sites and we also know that YouTube blocks
Scoble is becoming irrelevant
Robert, sorry to tell you this, but your latest post is further proof that your blog is slowly becoming irrelevant.
First off your posts have turned into a lot of look who I had lunch with/talked on the phone with/came over for dinner/gave me secret background knowledge that I can’t share/etc…
Secondly you have started to bash MS, your fomer employer and have joined everyone elses game of slaming them for every product.
And finally everything you like is now the best product out there and no should not use it. As a former network administrator who dealt with firewall policies, I would block Skype as well. For two reasons, it was against the company’s security policy, and because bandwidth is not free. If someone wanted to use Skype use it on thier own dime, not the company’s. Now as to the school blocking Skype, was there a reason? Did you even ask for the university’s reason? Or because you read it on a blog and there was a protest against the action it made it something for you to support?
I’m really thinking about unsubscribe from your blog, I find it worthless and pointless to read, and trust me outside of the “bubble” (as you comonly refere to it as, podcasting is not the next/current big thing. Having people hooked up to broadband and using the technology comes way before podcasting.
Windows Vista RC
So I’ve been interested in running Vista for the longest time, but have never been accepted/invited into one of the tests, but thanks to this post, I know now I can run Vista for 14 days before I need a valid key. So I’m downloading an RC as we speak ![]()
Kickoff Start Menu
I saw this and was sort of blown away. Let me explain why just sort of blown away. I’ve read a lot about how some people feel that the whole Linux world is set on copying MS and whatever they are doing and not a lot of new “innovation” and the new start menu (notice the reference to the Microsoft Start Menu, not the KDE Menu or the Gnome Footprint) looks a lot like what I’ve seen in XP and even in Vista (btw did you download the latest Release Canidate if you are interested?). While I think it looks great and I hope Kubuntu can get it in (the new menu is Edgy
), I don’t know if it really is that big of deal… I mean a new start menu is cool and all that, but in the Windows world I still run in “classic” mode. But good job on releasing it.
Keeping good talent happy at Microsoft
In a blog about Windows Media Center, Matt Goyer who worked for Microsoft announced he is leaving the company. The question he states at the end of his entry is the bigger deal. How does a company like MS keep fresh talent interested in working on things?
When I left jobs, the problem didn’t lie w/ the employer, the reason to change was mostly on my end. I was bored of doing the same thing day in and day out and wanted new scenery. Now I didn’t really do the same thing every day, no one really days, it just felt like I was bored. There were new programs comming in to learn and maintain and also new responsiblities as my job grew that would challenge me, however I was board.
I think that is why some the “big talent” leaves these companies. They get bored of creating product and releasing or working on products that haven’t been released yet. The company can be at fault for not challenging them, but I think it rests more on the individual then on the person who is leaving.
Disagree? feel free to let me know.
P.S. I wonder if we know more about the “big talent” leaving MS because the people are more open and discuss things like this on thier blogs. I wonder if the same happens at other companies of the same size?
Off the deep end
I don’t know what has happened to Robert lately but since leaving Microsoft his whole attitude has changed. No longer is he promoting anything but living off of his ego and slamming any company that doesn’t agree with him. He says he has super secret double background information on new things coming from Apple, but all he knows is wrong, he bashes Google for things, and lately has decided to bass anything and everything Microsoft does. Remember it was Microsoft that made Robert who he was and yet he has now turned to bite the hand that fed him.
Robert defines a blog as something that has been around for 3 months and has daily updates that aren’t just flicker uploads and also has more then 500 words. Hardly any posts here match the 500 word criteria, and this blog hasn’t been around for 3 months, yet he linked to me here. Sorry Robert, but just because you wrote a book, there are over 198 on Amazon if you search for the word blog there… It doesn’t mean your definition is the correct or right one. I wonder how these other writers feel about their definitions of blogs and if they disagree with your view.
Resumes are still valid
Today Robert argues that resumes are old news and to just blog instead. I disagree, Robert went “off the grid” however I still don’t think he got off to the real world. Here in the Midwest, if I pointed some one to my blog as my resume, I wouldn’t get the job, it wouldn’t even get me an interview. A resume still is the key to get pass the gatekeeper. In fact, if you read the MS Job Blog they still mention resumes. Obviously they are still needed.
What type of job would you be looking for would only require a blog instead of a resume? I’m working as a consultant now, and one of our clients asked for copies of all our resumes, should I have pointed them here instead? I don’t think so.
Sorry Robert, I disagree with you on this…

Update: Working on trying to get my name changed so it shows better. Instead of being lied to on resumes you should use the search engine that is also known as a verb to look me up ![]()
Another delay for Vista?
Well, it looks like lots of people are aruging for a another delay in Vista. Here’s hoping they don’t delay it too bad. I wish MS could get their act together and get this thing out the door.
However it could possibily be a win for Ubuntu. Here’s why: We have Edgy comming out in Oct. and it will be great. Bumpy and perhaps a bit unpolished but great. Then 6 months later there will be Edgy +1 comming out. So will we actually get two releases out before Vista comes out? That would be great if possible. Actually it would be the third release, Dapper, Edgy and maybe Edgy+1 whatever that will be. Here’s hoping.
New Post by Scoble
Robert has a new post out today once again praising Second Life as the greatest thing since sliced bread and I have to disagree with him again. Check out these two posts on Channel9, http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=220733 and http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=183060 seems that most people there either didn’t enjoy thier time or don’t want to play anymore. I have tried it and found it to be pretty boring and a waste of time and money. I would rather play City of Heroes or something like that. In fact out of all of my friends, I’m probablly the only one who has heard of the game in the first place.
Now I do have to agree w/ him about Outlook. I love Outlook, especially the things they have done with Outlook12. I would have a hard time moving to an all web based email system. I also use Kontact a lot (KDE’s knock-off of Outlook) and there are a lot things I don’t like about it and Outlook does a lot better job then anything else I’ve tried.
About
I’m a little unsual in the fact that I’m a conservative who also works in the tech industry. Well maybe I’m not really unusal it just seems that way as you spend time searching around the internet and other things.
Anways I have recently switched jobs from being a Windows Network Administrator to working as a full time consultant for a company that specialize in Altiris. Its a great product, but a ton of information to learn.
During my spare time, when I’m not running, spending time with my wife or hanging out w/ my dog, I work on the documentation for Kubuntu (http://www.kubuntu.org) and have somehow become the lead for the Kubuntu side of things. The documentation is great but we always need help. So stop by and help us out…
